day one: parks, tea houses, mahjong and mexican food!

after hoppin' in a taxi just off the train, we flew strait to a coffee shop called 'high connections,' owned and run by a friend of ours named Andrew...

the place is great! awesome atmosphere and great drinks! personally i was partial to the caramel steamer...

but the coolest part of the coffee shop was that it was nestled in the middle of this really quaint, almost Portuguese feeling quarter of ChengDu surrounded by colorful shops and tasty SiChuan cuisine!

we chilled at 'high connections' for a couple hours and did the unthinkable... watched Sunday Night Football LIVE!

one of the nerdy white people (hey, don't freak out, i'm a nerdy white person, and proud of it!) had a bootleg, illegal program to get American TV and cable programming to high-speed stream directly to his computer. we set up a projecter, and before i knew it, i felt like i was back at Jack Quinns drinkin' a beer and watching the game... only, sans the beer, and Sunday night to America is Monday afternoon to us. other than that, just like home!

after the beating the Bears gave to the Seahawks, we decided it was about time to check out the place we would be staying for the next week. like i said before, Andrew was a huge blessing, he hooked us up with a place some friends of his just moved out of, and in which he knew the land lord.

we got the place for 20 Yuen a nigh, per piece. which, for all the Americans out there is about $2.60. plus, the place was awesome!

great view...

comfy beads...

and shower...

who could ask for more?!?!

after we all got a rinse, it was off to the city! first stop: 'peoples park.'

this place was great! allbeit exteremely crowded. nevertheless, the time was awesome, and seriously relaxing! all we did was sit at a tea house, sip tea, watch all the nationals play mahjong, read, and journal. just what i needed!

the tea house we chilled at...

some tasty pear-lavender tea...

one of the many sights and statues in the park...

after the tea and people watching, we decided to head to dinner. some of the veteran teachers here in NanChang as well as pretty much every American in ChengDu said we just HAD to eat at 'Peter's Tex-Mex,' and really, when it comes to the first Western food in months... who am i to argue!

pete's!

i got the 'Big Texan Burrito!' it was big!

oh man, the food was a tasty treat, lemmy tell ya... but the best part of the day, dessert!

for the first time in months, i had real ice cream, and real strawberries all mixed together in a little slice of heaven i like to call a 'milkshake.'

oh man, just thinkin' about it brings a tear to my eye!

after stuffing ourselves, we rolled back to our arpartment and hit the pillows with a fury Zues has never known! we were out like lights!

with day one being a complete success, sleep came easily and not a minute too soon!

next post: 'day two: huanglongxi, crouching tiger, hidden dragon, sketchy offers around every corner!'

stay tuned!

apple - yeah, the food was great! well, for China, i mean. it's no amandas fonda or a serious hole-in-the-wall mexican restaurant staffed with the real thing... but yeah, it was a real treat!

raquel - yeah, sorry about that... and by that i mean sorry your team sucks! booyah, sucka! BURN!

Hey big guy,

I found on the internet. Do you see crap like this all the time in China? I hope so.

Oh, and Mark and I decided that you should move back to this side of the ocean, so go ahead and cancel your big plans.

Cheers,

Wow, that sure wasn't what the preview looked like - I guess it ate the word "this" and its accompanying closing link tag.

Stupid internets.
