whoa! sorry it's been so long since i have posted, this whole censorship thing is really pissing me off, but what are ya gonna do right?

...

I'LL TELL YA WHAT!!! YOU STICK IT TO THE MAN AND BREAK HIS LITTLE STRANGLE HOLD ON YOU WITH A WEB-BASED PROXY!!!

KISS IT!

...

anywho, sorry about that...

what i really wanted to get on for is to update you all on what's happening here in the Chang!

last night i got invited to an 'English-Speaking Singing Compreition,' that was at our school.

here is the invitation! - classy!

we honestly didn't really think much about whether or not this was an important school function, so we definately didn't make a big deal out of it.

however, when we got there, in hind-sight, maybe we should have...

we were seriously mobbed by students! flashes going off everywhere, people yelling our names, waiving, screaming, it was insane! we were like rock-stars!

we quickly were ushered to the front row of the performance area where we were served tea and mandarin oranges.

the hall wasn't huge, i mean, compared to like, red-rocks, but somehow, they still mabaged to cram over 400 students into this place! people who were standing were like a glob of gelatinous tofu; they moved as one, they were like human sardines packed into can half the size it should be. people were everywhere!

and oh man, when the music started, freakin' chaos! girls screaming, people yelling, everyone pushing! it was awesome!

and one of the oddest parts is that people, during the performences, would run up on stage and give flowers and kisses to those performing. like, they had to stop singing half the time to put down the mass of flowers they recieved from the crowd!

(one of my students just before he got mobbed by women with flowers! notice the sweet pic of him behind him!)

at the end, when all the winners were announced, unbeknown to us, ryan and i got to give out the awards! we were just chilling in our seats when someone on stage said our names in broken english and motioned for us to come up to the stage. we just kinda looked at each other confused for a couple seconds, then ran up there!

all and all, the night was filled with terrible singing, broken english, and awekward moments... i couldn't have asked for anything more! it was terribly enjoyable!

Hey Schmoopie,

First, i'm glad to know that my super advanced high-tech means of circumventing the great firewall of china are working out for you - i was worried for a while there that the [china]man was keeping you down!

As for the singing competition, i so wish i could have seen that... especially with the exciting computer action going on in the background. But whats up with all of the guitar/bass players - you need to teach them how to properly rock out, it looks like they're about to fall asleep. And what kind of music were they singing? Creed covers, i hope.

Anyway, glad you're alive.

yeah, i sent him a few ideas about various 'proxy' techniques, whereby you bounce your internet traffic off of some other computer (that china allows you talk to, and that can reach the rest of the internet)... just like they do in the movies to make it harder for the CIA to trace phone calls, except without the cheesy graphics and sound effects (beep beep beep "they've cracked the last link in Belgium - hang up now!!").

Anyway, somehow the simplest solution turned out to work, to some extent, for the time being. Hopefully it'll keep the Scuba Steve hotline up and running for a long time to come! :)

ah, it's good to be back! that much is certain! yeah, for some reason the silliest and least complecated answer worked... kinda strange... but a nice treat. and yeah, the guitarists and bassist were a tad unrockful. maybe due to the thanksgiving season they sucked down a bong full of tryptophan-packed turkey in some rock related stone temple pilots/pearl jam orgy... at least, that's my best guess...
